In celebration of their new National Geographic book, bestselling author Sy Montgomery and OctoNation founder Warren K. Carlyle team up to present breathtaking images, stunning new research, and moving stories about the smartest and most surprising invertebrates on Earth.
Secrets of the Octopus (also the title of the book’s companion 3-part TV series, to air on Earth Day) reveals octopuses are even more varied, more intelligent, and far more social than before imagined.
Learn about octopuses who use tools, octopuses who hunt cooperatively with other species, octopuses who live in underwater “cities”, and octopuses who disguise themselves as algae, sea snakes, flounders, and even clouds! And you’ll also meet some of the individual octopuses–fierce Athena, mischievous Octavia, playful Kali–who captured hearts around the world, paving the way to the founding of the world’s largest octopus fan club, and the flowering of the current golden age of octopus research.
The presentation will be followed by a cocktail/social hour with music, crafts and a book signing of Secrets of the Octopus in our Art Gallery.
Sy Montgomery: To research her 38 books for adults and kids, this nationally bestselling, award-winning author has been chased by an angry gorilla in Zaire, swum with pink dolphins and electric eels in the Amazon, hiked into the cloud forest of New Guinea after tree kangaroos, and been undressed by a wild orangutan in Borneo. Her books on octopuses draw upon the latest research on these fascinating cephalopods as well as her years of personal interactions with captive Giant Pacifics–individuals she considered her friends.
Warren Carlyle, an octopus expert and the force behind OctoNation®, the world’s largest octopus fan club, transformed his early childhood fascination into a global nonprofit with over a million followers. Inspired by Sy Montgomery’s 2015 New York Times Bestseller “The Soul of an Octopus,” Carlyle founded OctoNation to share his lifelong admiration for these captivating creatures. His work, celebrated by National Geographic, the Explorers Club, Meta and more, has made significant strides in ocean literacy. Dubbed the “OctoKing,” for his relentless pursuit in connecting cephalopod enthusiasts, researchers, and artists worldwide to foster wonder of the ocean.
The Aquarium of the Pacific’s First Wednesdays series focuses on animals, nature and conservation efforts. The events bring scientists, authors, and other experts into its Honda Pacific Visions Theater for an illustrated talk paired with book signing or meet and greets and cocktail/social hours with music and crafts. The programs are best suited for high school and college students, young professionals, and adults of all ages. Lectures are also live streamed.
